Killed for Inventing, Except He Wasn’t
A perfect little story claimed that angry cab drivers threw taximeter inventor Wilhelm Bruhn into a river. Unfortunately for the story, Bruhn survived long enough to keep filing patents. It is a useful reminder that the most memorable facts on the internet are often the ones nobody bothered to verify.
I recently discovered a blog called Peluche: Historias Extra-ordinarias. It collects unusual stories, statistics, and numerical curiosities. I have no idea where many of its facts come from, which is normally the sort of detail one should investigate before repeating them, but I enjoyed the blog and found this story particularly memorable:
The first taxi as we understand it today appeared in 1891, when the German engineer Wilhelm Bruhn invented the taximeter.
Cab drivers disliked the idea of a machine controlling their income, so they punished Bruhn by throwing him into a river.
Killed for inventing the taximeter.
It is a magnificent anecdote. Short, cruel, and perfectly constructed. An inventor creates a machine to calculate fares objectively, the workers affected by it become furious, and poetic justice arrives in the form of a nearby body of water. It contains technology, labor conflict, revenge, and a memorable ending. You could not improve it without adding a horse.
There is only one problem. Wilhelm Bruhn did not die in the river.
The inconvenient survival of Wilhelm Bruhn
Friedrich Wilhelm Gustav Bruhn is associated with the development of the modern taximeter in Germany during the early 1890s. The machine calculated a fare according to distance and waiting time, replacing at least part of the traditional negotiation between driver and passenger with a mechanical result. In 1897, a Daimler Victoria equipped with a taximeter was delivered to Friedrich Greiner in Stuttgart, helping establish one of the first motorized taxi services.
The river story appears in many accounts, sometimes with Bruhn being thrown into the water and sometimes with the taximeter itself receiving the aquatic treatment. The sources repeating it rarely explain where or when this happened, which river was involved, who witnessed it, or why a reasonably dramatic attack on an inventor left no obvious contemporary record.
More importantly, Bruhn continued inventing after his supposed punishment. A United States patent published in 1896 identifies him as a resident of Berlin and describes his improvements to fare-registering equipment. Another French taximeter patent was published under his name in 1910. Unless patent offices had begun accepting applications from drowned German engineers, the story requires some revision.
Bruhn lived until 1927.
This does not prove that no angry cab driver ever pushed him into shallow water. Perhaps he fell into a river, climbed out, dried his papers, and returned to work with a slightly lower opinion of the transport industry. History contains stranger afternoons.
It does prove that he was not killed for inventing the taximeter.
Too good to verify
The interesting part is not that one blog published a false story. Every blog, newspaper, encyclopedia, and person who speaks before finishing breakfast will eventually get something wrong. The interesting part is why this particular mistake survives. It survives because it feels true.
New technology changes how people work. Workers resist machines that threaten their income or autonomy. Inventors underestimate the anger their inventions provoke. The taximeter replaced personal negotiation with a number produced by a device, so the idea that drivers hated its creator sounds completely reasonable.
Once a story feels reasonable, verification begins to look unnecessary. The anecdote arrives already polished. It explains the invention, introduces conflict, and ends with a punishment. A dry correction saying that Bruhn later registered additional patents has terrible narrative instincts. The river wins every time.
This is how internet folklore grows. One site publishes a curious detail. Another rewrites it. A third removes the cautious wording. Soon, “according to legend” becomes “it is said,” then “cab drivers threw him into the river,” and finally “he died for his invention.” Each version becomes shorter and more confident. Sources disappear, certainty increases, and the story improves.

The original story was already interesting
The frustrating part is that the real history did not need a fictional death.
A mechanical device began regulating the price of urban transport. Drivers objected because the machine affected how their work was measured and paid. Passengers gained a visible calculation instead of relying entirely on negotiation. The taximeter became so closely associated with hired cars that it eventually gave the taxi its name. That is already a story about technology changing trust between workers and customers.
The machine did not merely count distance. It transferred authority. Instead of asking the driver what the journey cost, the passenger could look at a device. Whether the device was calibrated honestly was another question, because technology rarely eliminates disputes. It usually gives them new vocabulary.
The taximeter also became part of a larger transformation. In June 1897, the Daimler Victoria with a meter was delivered to a Stuttgart transport operator, combining the fare-measuring device with the emerging motorcar. The modern taxi did not appear in one immaculate moment, but through several inventions and commercial experiments that gradually produced the service we recognize.
Nobody needed to die. Apparently somebody decided otherwise.
